Coach Christine Giunta-Mayer wins 2017 VBM National HS coach of the year

Coach Christine Giunta-Mayer completed her 12th year as Varsity Boys’ volleyball coach at Glenbard West. With Coach Giunta-Mayer's direction in 2014 her team accomplishments included defeating Top Ten in State ranked Lake Park, Naperville Central, Glenbard East, Walter Payton, Lyons Township, St. Francis, and Vernon Hills. The Varsity broke every school record in 2014 as they came home with two tournament 1st place trophies (Glenbard East Springfest and Vernon Hills Cougar Classic).  The Varsity also finished in the final four at the Brother Rice Smack Attack and the Benet Academy Tournament, finishing in Gold.  The Toppers also broke the school record for most consecutive wins in a season with twelve and finishing with the most wins of 35 in one season!  For the second time in the history of Glenbard West Boys’ Volleyball, the Toppers came back to Biester with a first place finish in the West Suburban Silver Conference, finishing 6-0. The Varsity worked all year to maintain a Top 10 teams in the state with all levels sweeping the conference.  Finishing the 2014 season with an overall record of 35-7, the Hilltopper's remember their journey together as they made an incredible state playoff.  With their first regional win in Biester gym against Benet Academy, they continue their Sectional win against first seed Naperville Central and made their way to the Final Four defeating Morton High School.  Coach Giunta-Mayer finished the Elite 8 game in Hoffman Estates and watched her nine seniors graduate on Duchon Field with ten minutes to spare, a DAY TO REMEMBER.  In 2014 Glenbard West Boys Volleyball set standards for their teams, finishing 3rd in state, ANOTHER SCHOOL RECORD.  “Pure Focus” and outstanding leadership by captains, coaches, and administration allowed for this journey to happen.  Coach Giunta-Mayer is the Athletic Director and Physical Education/Swim/Health Teacher at St. Petronille School in Glen Ellyn. She has been teaching swim and coaching boys’ volleyball for eighteen years. Coach Mayer is also an Alumni of Glenbard West High School (Class of 1992) and was further educated at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles CA where she played NCAA Division I Softball. She received her BA in Communication Studies and attended National-Louis University where she continued to study and completed her Master’s Degree in Education. She recently received her 2nd Masters in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education and completed her Type 75 Certification in the summer of 2010 in Administration.
